Gavin James was born in Ealing, London and now lives mostly in South Switzerland, on a Greek island or in Wales. He started learning classical guitar at the age of eleven, and used this as a basis to explore other styles of music such as folk und blues and popular songs of the day.

Gavin started hitch-hiking around Europe at the age of seventeen, supporting himself by playing in bars and busking. In the ten years of his travels he gained musical and life experiences which inspired him to write songs about his life on the road.

Gavin built up a circuit of clubs and pubs in Europe, where he has played professionally for more than twenty years. He was invited to play as supporting act to the popular British folk group Magna Carta on their tour of Germany. Since then he has played concerts and festivals in Sweden, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland and Germany. He has played on radio and T.V. in Europe and toured America and in 2006 in Australia, where he won the first prize at the Maleny Music Festival. He has built up as solid reputation for his entertaining and varied repertoire.

He has a wide and interesting programme ranging from Irish music, popular 60’s, 70’s and 80’s songs, to his own compositions and blues and boogie, accompanying himself on guitar and banjo.

Gavin James è nato a Londra da madre irlandese e padre inglese. Attualmente, quando non ha concerti, vive nel Galles o su di una piccola isola della Grecia.

Ha studiato chitarra classica ed in seguito ha avuto una relazione più intensa con la musica FOLK e BLUES.

Gavin ha iniziato a viaggiare ed a vivere della sua musica all’età di diciassette anni. Le sue prime composizioni si collegano a situazioni di intense emozioni ed a esperienze di vita, vissute sulla strada.

Suona principalmente da solo con molti concerti in tutta l’Europa, ma ha anche collaborato con diversi gruppi fra i quali “MAGNA CARTA” (GB) durante la tourné in Germania, dove ha potuto mettere fortemente in evidenza i diversi stili musicali (irlandese, celtica, blues, folk e composizioni personali).

Negli ultimi quindici anni, Gavin James ha suonato in molti posti del Cantone Ticino. Dai grossi festival, “The Music Festival San Salvatore” vetrina di molti songwriters, hai Pub e Teatri di tutto il Cantone. Citandone alcuni segnaliamo il Teatro Materno di Ascona, I’Osteria del teatro a Banco.
Nel 2005 all’ Irish pub di Tesserete é stato filmato ed intervistato da Teleticino. Negli ultimi cinque anni ha collaborato nei suoi concerti in Ticino con artisti del posto. Regolarmente fa coppia con Max Dega, chitarrista blues, molto conosciuto e talentuso, inoltre in alcuni concerti si avvale pure di uno dei migliori armonicisti Svizzeri, mister J.C. Harpo.
I concerti di Gavin sono molto variati sia negli stili che nelle dinamiche. Avendo un repertorio molto vasto Gavin riesce sempre a coinvolgere il pubblico. Il suo repertorio varia da canzoni tipiche di musica Irish, a composizioni proprie, fino ad arrivare al blues, boogie e rock.

Negli ultimi dieci anni ha partecipato e suonato in molti festival in Svezia, Olanda, Belgio, America e Australia. Inoltre ha vinto il promo premio al Maleny Music Festival.

Gavin James ist in London geboren, lebt aber heute, wenn er nicht gerade in Sachen Musik unterwegs ist, auf einem Bauernhof in Wales oder – während eines anderen Teils des Jah­res – in der Abgeschiedenheit einer kleinen griechischen Insel.

Er studierte klassische Gitarre, fühlte sich je­doch nach Beendigung des Studiums immer stärker zu Folk und Blues hingezogen. Gavin begann zu reisen. Als Globetrotter lernte er fremde Kulturen und neue interessante Musik kennen. So eignete er sich über die Jahre ein sehr breites Repertoire mit den unterschied­lichsten Stilrichtungen an.

Zunehmend schrieb und schreibt Gavin auch eigene Lieder. Oft berichten seine Songs von seinen ‚on the road‘ - Erfahrungen. Gavin’s Ziel ist es möglichst abwechs­lungsreiche vielseitige Musik zu komponieren. Heute noch unterbricht Gavin seine Arbeit immer wieder durch Studienreisen u.a. auch nach Amerika und Australien.

Sein Bühnenprogramm besteht aus einem aussergewöhnlich breitem Liedgut unter­schiedlichster Stilrichtungen vom urwüchsigem Blues, Boogie, Rock über Irish-Folk, bekannten Oldies bis hin zu unbekannten Liedern von anderen Songwriter und sei­nen originellen Eigenkompositionen. Ebenso abwechslungsreich wie seine Musik, ist auch das Spiel mit Gitarre und Banjo. Gavin beherrscht die unterschiedlichsten Spieltechniken unter anderem zum Beispiel Slide-Gitarre und Fingerpicking.

Den Sprung auf die Bühne schaffte Gavin James, als er im Vorprogramm der britischen Folk-Rock-Band MAGNA CARTA durch Deutschland tourte und dabei als „Newcomer“ mit seinem weitgespannten musikalischen Können für eine echte Überraschung sorgte.

Seither gibt er mit zunehmendem Erfolg Konzerte in vielen westeuropäischen Län­dern und gastiert bei namhaften Festivals. (Ende Oktober 2006 gewann er den ersten Preis beim Folkfestival in Maleny QLD/AUS.) Gavin James, der es meisterlich versteht, sich auf der Gitarre mit beherrschtem, melodiös-straffem Fingerspiel zu begleiten, ist auf dem besten Weg, sich als Singer-Songwriter einen Namen zu machen.
